Ask how something can last a thousand years and most people reach for a technology: the cloud, the blockchain, a special disk rated for centuries. Every one of those answers is wrong, not because the technologies are bad, but because permanence was never a technology to begin with.

Permanence is a chain of custody. It is a relay race in which the record is handed from one keeper to the next, forever, and the only thing that matters is that no handoff is ever dropped.

Why single technologies always fail the test

Hard drives fail in years. Cloud accounts end when the billing does. File formats die when their software is discontinued. Even blockchains, marketed as eternal, have died by the dozen when their communities dispersed, and the ones that live are far too expensive to store anything larger than a fingerprint.

Bet everything on one technology and you have simply chosen how you will eventually lose the record. The question is never which technology lasts forever. It is how the record is carried when each technology, inevitably, does not.

The four legs of an honest permanence promise

Open formats, so any future keeper can read the record without the original software. Multiple simultaneous copies at independent organizations, so no single failure ends the race. Tamper evidence, so a surviving copy can be trusted and not merely found. And a named successor, a written commitment about who inherits the archive if the current keeper stops, so the relay has a next runner even when the company dies.

Notice that only one of these is technical. The others are about copies, organizations, and promises. That is the honest shape of durability, and it is why 'it's on the blockchain' is a weaker claim than it sounds: a chain can prove nobody altered the record, but it cannot, by itself, carry the record forward.

The blockchain does exactly one job here: it makes lying about the past detectable. The carrying, the copying, the handing-on, that is done by people and independent systems. Anchored on the chain, never stored on it.

What this means for you

When anyone promises your data will last forever, ask them for the relay, not the technology. Where are the copies? Who holds them? In what format? How would I know if one were altered? Who inherits the record if you disappear? A real permanence promise answers all five. A marketing one names a single technology and hopes you stop asking.
