The Library of Alexandria was not destroyed in one dramatic fire, the way the story is usually told. It declined over centuries through fires, budget cuts, neglect, and the slow indifference of people who assumed someone else was taking care of it. That is the more frightening version, because it is the one that keeps repeating.
The pattern is simple: humanity gathers its knowledge into one impressive place, admires it, and then loses it, because a single place is a single point of failure and time is patient.
We never stopped building Alexandrias
Every generation builds a new one and makes the same bet. The medieval monastery. The national archive. The photo shoebox in the closet. Today it is the cloud account, the social profile, the phone that holds every picture of your children behind a password only you know.

Redundancy: more than one copy, at more than one organization, in more than one place, so no single disaster reaches them all. Open formats: plain, documented structures that a program written a century from now can still read, not a proprietary file that dies with its software. Tamper evidence: a way to prove a copy has not been quietly altered, so a surviving copy can be trusted and not just found.
